I believe that our greatest strength for AI innovation lies hidden in the nature of simply being human.
Technology is a reflection of our humanity. This means that the secret to successful AI is first to foster your understanding of what it means to be human. The further we dig into this self-awareness, the better we will become at creating AI complimentary to our strengths and needs.
For me personally, I have always been fascinated by the ethical layer of humanity, and so have chosen to embark on this exploration into the mysteries of human nature through the lens of ethics and morality. I’ve also recognized that this is something that can’t be done in a vacuum of thoughts echoing around in my head, but instead requires community and a diversity of perspectives to truly even begin to understand.
Which leads me to this moment and the start to this newsletter that you now join me in. Full of ideas, insights, and practical tips, this is a newsletter and community for the next generation of AI leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators striving to change our technology-driven world, for good.
So this is a welcome letter to you, my reader, as you join me to explore the depths of ethical values from a design thinking approach and how to use these unconventional ideas to drive real business impact for a competitive edge in AI.
Welcome to the pursuit of good tech.
What to expect in the following weeks
This may only be just another newsletter, but I’ve got big plans for it nonetheless. What will hopefully become a conduit for critical thought, innovative exploration, and creative endeavors, this newsletter is a work in progress as we learn how to collaboratively push the boundaries on our current thinking around emerging technology.
But, Rome was not built in a day, so before we can change the world (read with a tinge of irony), let’s start with something a little more practical…
For those of you meeting me for the first time, my name is Olivia and my day job is an AI Ethicist. I spend a lot of time working with executives on developing Responsible AI strategies, training leaders on AI Ethics techniques, and advancing the collective knowledge base on ethics-by-design.
Recently, I released something called the Values Canvas, a holistic management template for developing Responsible AI strategies and documenting existing ethics efforts. The Values Canvas is made up of three pillars: People, Process, and Technology. People looks at who is building or using AI, Process is focused on how AI is being built or used, and Technology is about what AI is being built or used. Each pillar is broken down into three elements, with each element capturing a specific need that your Responsible AI initiatives must fill.
So here’s the plan:
The Values Canvas has nine elements in total, and for the next nine weeks you’ll be receiving a case study on one of the nine straight to your inbox.
Along the way I’ll be asking for your thoughts, input, and experience in each of these categories with the goal of building out a database of Responsible AI in action examples
After the nine weeks are up, we’ll shift up into using ethical values for AI innovation. What exactly will this entail? Well, you’ll just have to stay tuned to find out…
Sounds like a plan? Great, then let’s get started.
To familiarize yourself with the Values Canvas and get a visual on the categories of case studies to come, be sure to download your very own open-access copy below.
In the meantime
While you are patiently awaiting the next post, check out my book Responsible AI. Responsible AI guides readers step-by-step through the process of establishing robust yet manageable ethical AI initiatives for any size organization, outlining the three core pillars of building a responsible AI strategy: people, process and technology. It provides the insight and guidance needed to help leaders fully understand the technical and commercial potential of ethics in AI while also covering the operations and strategy needed to support implementation.
